Check ups & Cleans
Dental cleanings and exams are two of the most basic yet important preventive treatments we provide at our office. Each time you visit our dental practice for a checkup, we will provide a professional teeth cleaning and dental exam to help your smile stay healthy. During your cleaning and exam, our dental team will:
- Clean your teeth by removing any plaque or tartar (also called dental calculus), which can lead to tooth decay and periodontal disease
- Floss and polish your teeth for a healthy, bright smile
- Examine your smile for signs of any damaging dental conditions or diseases
We may utilize dental X-rays to further evaluate your smile and make certain that you receive the dental care you need. Regular dental cleanings and exams are essential in maintaining good oral health, preventing cavities and gum disease, and making sure that any damaging conditions are treated as early as possible.
We recommend that you visit us every six months for a routine dental cleaning and exam. We may suggest more frequent visits if needed, and we also encourage you to contact us if you suffer from a dental emergency, pain or injury.
Fillings
A dental filling is a restoration used to repair minor to moderate tooth damage. We may recommend a filling if a tooth has been damaged by decay (for example, if it has a cavity), or if a tooth suffers from minor fracturing or chipping. The dental filling is used to restore the tooth to its original structure and function, and to return your smile to good health. There are two main types of dental fillings available: amalgam fillings and composite fillings. An amalgam or gold filling is what is often referred to as ‘mercury’ fillings as some contained mercury. Metal fillings are effective but are very obvious. A composite resin dental filling is coloured to look like a natural tooth and made of a plastic dental resin. These are strong and durable.
The process for placing a filling requires just one comfortable visit to our office. Our Dentist will first remove the decayed and damaged portion of the tooth, then clean it to remove all traces of decay. We then fill the area with the filling material and shape it to match your tooth’s shape. Finally, the filling is hardened for a lasting restoration.
Children’s Dentistry
Free General Dentistry for Teens
You may not be aware that all young adults are eligible for FREE dental care from age 13 until their 18th birthday.
Children in New Zealand who meet the eligibility criteria for publicly funded health and disability services are entitled to free basic oral health services from year 9 to 17 years of age (until their 18th birthday). This excludes orthodontics, teeth whitening, specialist x-rays and dental hygienist appointments. Please refer to the Ministry of Health website for full terms and conditions.
Your young adult may not have any dental problems right now, so you may feel there is no need for a check-up. Here are two good reasons to book a FREE check- up:
- Preventative health care and routine hygiene removes plaque and tartar from teeth, helping to prevent costly dental problems as an adult.
- By having a check-up and correcting any hidden or potential problems right now, your young adult could be saving themselves a fortune in potential dental bills.
Our team believe this initiative is extremely beneficial to young adults as it helps to detect and treat any potential dental problems before they escalate, often requiring costly, extensive treatment later in life. Furthermore this initiative encourages adolescents to develop a strong oral care routine. While they are young treatment is free to provide a solid foundation for maintaining a healthy smile later in life.
We invite parents to enroll their children to our practice from the age of 12.
Special Dental Benefits
Lakes Care Dental is able to offer free care for special dental benefits when a referral from a school dental nurse is provided. We also provides free care for emergency treatments outside the hours of the school dental clinic.
