Are you unhappy with your gummy smile?

Many patients come to see us because they feel they have a ‘gummy’ smile, something they usually notice in photographs, resulting in them hiding their smile or avoiding smiling all together! A smile can appear gummy for different reasons. It may be that there is excess gum, or that the upper lip lifts a lot when they smile. It can even simply come down to the size and shape of the teeth.

Every dental case is different, and we will need to see you for a personalised consultation to discuss your options and plan your case. However, some of the options include the following.

Gum-recontouring

In some cases, there is simply too much gum, so gum re-contouring or ‘gum-lifts’ is a great option to reduce gummy smiles.

Gum Lift with Porcelain Veneers

Sometimes gummy smiles can be a combination of two problems; you may need to decrease gum and increase tooth size. This can be achieved by this combination treatment.

Anti-wrinkle Treatment

Gummy smiles can sometimes be the result of a ‘hypermobile’ upper lip, which retracts too far when you smile. In some cases, this can be controlled with anti-wrinkle injections.

How long is the treatment?

  • Gum recontouring – up to 2 weeks
  • Gum lift with porcelain veneers – 4-6 weeks
  • Anti-wrinkle treatment – numerous visits, cases will vary.

How long does it last?

  • Gum recontouring – up to 10 years
  • Gum lift with porcelain veneers – 10-20+ years
  • Anti-wrinkle treatment – will require regular maintenance

The reality is many dental procedures cause discomfort of differing levels depending on the type and severity of the procedure.

Our priority is to ensure you are as comfortable as possible throughout all procedures. We also offer the option of sedation if you would prefer to sleep during treatment due to nerves or lengthy appointments.

Case study

Gummy smile – New cosmetics

In Joanne’s case there was a few issue which needed to be resolved; the proportion of her teeth, the narrowness of her smile, her gummy smile, and her deep bite. All of her issues were resolved with porcelain treatment. Being that this was a very complex case and was the third time the patient had received treatment, a very meticulous analysis and detailed plan was outlined to ensure the patients comfort and expectations were well accounted for.

Can I see results of others who have had this problem resolved?

Please see below the examples of just some of our many happy clients who have had their gummy smile problems resolved. We thank these clients for allowing us to share their amazing results and stories.
